101 Update

It has been quite some time since I have updated on the 101 in 1001 list!  I figured I'd put everything into one post.

2. Do the 1000 hours outside challenge (1000 Hours Outside )  228/1000

So, the last week we have been outside a LOT (38 hours).  Which is great.  We are now at 228 hours, 76 days in.  Averaging exactly 3 hours per day!  Yay!

4. Go to the zoo (done June 3 2023)

We went to the zoo in the beginning of June (I have another post on that).

5. Go berry picking (done jul6 2023)

This week I finally took the kids strawberry picking!  The last time I went out was when Bram was a baby.  Or maybe it was M.  I don't know.  I might have been pregnant with M... that is probably the case because I don't remember having to watch anyone at the time, and I didn't have a baby wearing item until after Bram was born.  I did wear my 1 year old (we'll call her Kit Kat) which has made my legs SO SORE now after the fact, haha.  Picked 5 pails with the help of the kiddos in about an hour, and processed most of those for the freezer.

7. Find 5 interesting places/events to visit in local area (1/5)

We went to the festival in the city over Father's day weekend.  The kids really enjoyed the kid tents, especially as they could make clay crafts.  We took them home to bake later that day.  Even I made something!  There were bouncy castles and slides, a mini golf area, rides (we didn't do those, sadly), and food.  We had to get some mini doughnuts.

14. Clean the ditches along the highway by our property (July 8 2023)

Today I grabbed one of my kids and we went along the highway and picked up two full bags of trash!  We try to do this each year, but I normally don't go all the way to the bridge.  It took us a couple of hours.  It's funny how people like to honk at you as they go by.  I think they are expressing 'thanks' in a way.  It's always nice to see that people take a little care in the ditches.

42. Read entire Bible in a year (22/66 books)

I just finished the book of Job, and am still going through Acts.

47. Do ‘on farm’ work that saves us at least $20 000 from if we would have hired out. (3000/20000)

Pretty proud of myself for this one.  I filed the corporate income taxes on my own.  Hiring an accountant costs $3000, and I was doing most of the work already, so I figured I'd do this one myself.  I did it last year and set up the program I have to be able to spit out the numbers for me, so it didn't take nearly as long as last year.  Yay!

53. Do a detox/cleanse (June 15 2023)

I made myself a chart of things I wanted to do to help detox my body over the entire month of June.  I really only did very well at checking all the things off during the first 2 weeks, but then missed a few of the things each day.  That's ok.  I did it.  I wish I could find a proper detox kit as that is easier than what I chose to do, and it didn't seem to help me lose any weight or anything, but that's ok.

54. Try 10 new recipes (4/10)

We did a life skills week camp here at home the second week of June.  As part of that, there were a few new recipes to do.  The kids were all on board making dandelion muffins.  No joke.  They collected the dandelion flowers and we pulled the yellow parts out of the green and washed them (that was tricky) and made them into muffins.  They were actually not bad.  We also had a class on an Italian dish... gnudi and pasta sauce.  I was able to make the sauce that day, but we made the gnudi on Friday to have with our build your own pasta salad bar.  They turned out pretty good!

Then we recently found out that my oldest is reacting to gluten.  Not through the doctor, mind you, just that she has digestive issues each time.  So, we've been doing what we can to reduce and eliminate the gluten in her diet.  She really misses pizza, and is finding herself always feeling hungry now (likely due to not having the fiber in her diet that she did before).  So, yesterday I tried a new recipe for a pizza crust that uses cottage cheese (which I made on Wednesday), eggs, psyllium husk/fiber, etc.  It turned out really good, and she was so thankful to have pizza again!  (find the video I used here)

59. Label breaker panel (DONE June 15 2023)

During our skills camp, we learned about electrical wiring, wiring a plug, wiring a light socket, and checking breakers.  We decided to label ours right away, too!  Yay!

94. Hatch our own chickens

So I took some of the eggs and have written on them and placed them with the chickens as they like to sit on them in the one spot in the coop.  It has been 3 weeks and no hatching yet.  I'm not sure this is going to work, and may need to actually invest in an incubator.  2 of the eggs were warm yesterday morning when I checked them... and they weren't freshly lain, so they may be warm from chicks inside.  Fingers crossed!

95. Successfully grow a garden

The potatoes and tomatoes are growing nicely!  I have flowers on the tomato plants!  I've never had that before!  And the pepper plants have finally sprouted.  They took longer than I expected.  M is growing a cucumber plant of her own.

So we did accomplish a few more tasks in the last number of weeks.  11 down, 90 to go.

The Zoo

So in the beginning of June we went to the zoo on one of my husband's saturdays off!  It was a lot of fun! It was rather warm that day, and a few of us got a little sun burnt, but the kids all had a great time.  I missed seeing the zoo as the last time we went was fall of 2019 for a homeschool thing when our 6th was a baby.

My husband loves the wolves.  They were a ways from us and difficult to spot, but we could see them!

This guy was my favorite.  When we arrived, he was nowhere to be seen, but we passed by later in the day when the clouds were rolling in (it rained just as we left the zoo) and he was so happy to see us that he came to the front of the cage and was purring.  So cute!  As long as he's behind the cage, anyway.  Not sure I'd want to meet him without that protection, haha.

I remember these when I was a kid.  They were always fun to climb into.

An axolotl.  Why do I know anything about these guys?  Animal crossing.  Yup.

The kids thought this guy was fake at first, because he was moving so slowly.

They have a 'dinosaur' area, and Bram decided to try to mimic this guy.

I love the seals!  They were so cute!  They love to swim back and forth over and over.

The polar bears were out and posing for their pictures.

These guys are so cute.  I love owls!

I remember these as a kid, too.  Some things are just nostalgic.

It was a lovely trip out as a family.  Hoping for many more this summer!
