The 14 days of Valentine's has returned.
Five years ago I decided to have some fun for my hubby and made his Valentine's gift stretch over the first 14 days of the month. Some of the things were simple, some extravagant (and probably not to be repeated as they were a LOT of work), some were cute, others... well, c'mon folks, it's Valentine's!
This year I'll be keeping them pretty simple. I just cannot take as much time into them like I could then. But still, it's the thought behind them that makes them really special.
So far I've done days 1-4. Day one ended up being late due to us getting home late that evening (which actually pushed day 2 over as well, but I did days 2 and 3 yesterday). I have the other days mostly planned out. I'll post them periodically if you wish to see.
I like to make Valentine's day special. I always have. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's because it's still a while before Easter, and Christmas ends too early for me. I just love to celebrate. Before marriage, I would do something special for family. One year I made invites and got my parents dressed up for a meal I made them... making the dining room like a restaurant. My parents were to dine alone... don't worry, my siblings got some food too (and little goody bags). I've done a Valentine's jeopardy game years ago. I make my own valentines. Last year I made homemade chocolate truffles for family and hubs of course. And one year I even took my husband to the Monster Truck show that was happening that weekend.
Of course, there are many different things you can do for your sweety that don't have to cost much at all. I don't think Valentine's day is one where you should spend all your cash on cheesy chocolates (although I love chocolate) or roses that are way overpriced and wilt within the week. I have a number of ideas posted here, if you like.
I think it really is the thought that counts... and it's fun to get creative and try new things. I'm planning on making us a nice candlelight dinner for the 13th (as we are busy on the 14th, it being Sunday and all).
What I think is most important is that I have fun with this. I'm looking forward to trying different ideas... although I will be investing a lot of time into this little project.
Anyway, I have to share something that happened today (it's related... no worries).
I was going to give hubs his 4th day gift this morning as part of breakfast. I totally forgot that he had yet another farm meeting to go to... till 3pm. No breakfast. Serious. I had it started when I saw him coming towards the house. Wasn't finished cutting the apple by the time he left.
Sigh
I was rather disappointed. Almost wanted to cry. But, instead I took out the lemon juice and soaked all the fruit in it briefly, arranged it on the plate, and decided to wait until he DID get home before putting the yogurt middles on the flowers for him. I finished it up in 5 minutes... just before he woke from his nap (yes... he needed a nap after that meeting. I'm not sure why). He was thrilled to have a snack waiting for him before he had to get into the barn. So... success. After what I was scared would be a failure.
I guess I should get cracking on day 5...
So, what do you do for Valentine's day? Do you go anywhere? Do you plan anything special? Or do you enjoy a nice night in... perhaps a cuddle on the couch while watching a fave movie? Do tell... I need ideas for next year!

This is so unbelievably sweet, I remember that you did this last year as well. I love it!
We don't do anything for Valentine's Day. ANYTHING. One year we turned our futon (our couch at the time) into a bed and just sprawled out watching movies all day, but that's not exactly romantic, haha. (Though Mike DID make these awesome stuffed mushrooms... and set off the smoke alarm even though there was no smoke somehow... it beeped for almost an HOUR... fun fun fun, LOL!)
Every year I swear I'm going to get better at it, but it doesn't really happen. And because we're not really the "romantic type" (I don't think Mike would care if I made a card, bought a card, or didn't give him a card at all, one way or another) it just doesn't seem like the type of thing to put lots of effort into.
And then I read a post like this! I LOVE IT!
You have got to be the sweetest wife EVER! (you husband does know this, doesn't he?!?!?)
I love that you do this. It is SO something I would have done, years ago. I have really let things slip through the years along with my enthusiasm. But it is so neat to see someone STILL taking the time to do this:)
I can't wait to see what the remaining days hold!!
Last year I used your wonderful idea of making a box of coupons to give to my sweetie, as we were out of town for the weekend and it was difficult to carry much with me. We had so much fun working through (some of) them, although I probably still owe him a few promises! This year, I'm going to try making your delicious-looking truffles.
The LAST love language on my hubby's list is gifts, and it's near the top for me. In the past I've baked & decorated a heart-shaped layer cake, made him candles, cards, etc, but it just really isn't his thing unfortunately, so I don't do that type of thing anymore. Disappointing for me but I want to show love to him in his language, right? This year we're going to the city & using two gift cards, one for Boston Pizza and one for a movie theatre. Yay, free V-Day! Just need a gas gift card yet...
